In Memory of Our Friends

In Fond Memory of

Rudy and Logan

2001 - May 2015     2003 - October 2015

These two little pals were inseparable and brought lots of joy and unbounded love to their humans. When they came to stay in Seaforth, they were a pleasure to have around and their silly antics could always make us laugh. There was no better way to relax at the end of the day than to have them crawl up on your lap. They would enjoy some pats while you felt the warmth of their affection as they watched you with their beautiful brown eyes. Just being near them made a person feel good.

In Fond Remembrance

Luka, Pago, Molly and Suzanne

These long-time friends have recently passed away and we want to remember them and all the great times we had together over the years.

"We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare, and love we can spare.

And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man ever made."

~ M.Facklam~

We are working on videos for each of these and a link will be posted as soon as they are completed.

August 25, 2003 - April 25, 2015

A keen player, a bold and fearless swimmer yet an amiable companion to

many fellow critters over the years. He could be silly at times, acting like a clown as he collected as many orange balls as he could carry.  He loved to brag about his exploits after rolling in the sand and digging a hole.

That tail of his was always waving side to side.

Here is a short video remembering Luka.

January 2000 - May 30, 2015

In spite of being very shy, he was always on patrol, watching and keeping everyone safe. He was most content when all was peaceful in his world. He wasn't the type of guy to show his feelings in a big way, he could be reserved and aloof but he was always gentle.

He was well respected.

June 3, 2003 - June 17, 2015

She was charming and, at times, impish as she chased the orange balls and talked about her success as she swam through the waves. So easy to please and happy to amuse herself yet she enjoyed the company of her fellow critters. She was happy to lay in her favorite spot on the front veranda and watch the world go by.

Here is a short video celebrating Molly.

March 18, 2005 - July 24, 2015

A well bred lady who could be cordial while still being fastidious. She was knowing and enjoyed watching the action from her favorite perch on the sofa in the sunroom. On some occasions she would let loose and fetch the orange balls in the waves and enjoy a cordial romp with her friends on the beach.

Teddy was the very first guest to stay with us in Seaforth and his photo from back in 2004 has been on the banner of our home page since our web site was created. He was always ready for a beach run and he also enjoyed a good roll in a pile of wood shavings or bark mulch. He was a little shy at times but once he got to know you, he was a good friend and always ready to listen.

"Dogs never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation."

March 6, 2005 - March 5, 2015

Just one day shy of her tenth birthday this precious little gal departed this earth and went to be with her friends who had gone ahead and prepared a special place for her. They will find her restored and she can now look down and see those she loved and left behind. She wouldn't want us to be sad. But we will miss the brave little dog who never let anything stop her from enjoying life, trusting her loved ones and giving the best of herself to everyone she met.

A cloud has been turned inside out

to make a fluffy bed for Olive

clearing the counter of muffins,

Olive will find her bed and have a sleep.

Heavenly beings watch over her and

there are no bad dreams.*

I know that it must be different,
now that I am no longer there.
I realize how much I was loved
and how all of you did care.

I know it will be hard at first
when you look around for me.
Expecting to find me in my bed
or beside my favourite tree.

Someday you will begin to see
although it’ll take some time,
the happy times you shared with me,
the memories are yours and mine.

I’ll remember you, my friends,
and how much you meant to me.
So please don’t grieve and don’t be sad,
it was just my time to leave.

A Treasured Friend

I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And share her silent thoughts with me...

She'll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to His golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears,
I thank Him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me
And for her love and loyalty.

When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know...
I shall not fear the transient dark
For she will greet with her bark.

Dogs That Have Shared Our Lives

"They will not go quietly,
the dogs who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.

Old habits still make us think
we hear a barking at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them...and always will."

2002 - 2014

On September 6 of 2014 we had to say goodbye to our friend.

Simon was usually a quiet guy but when a beach walk was imminent, this mild-mannered guy became a howling beach dude who loved to show the youngsters how to fetch and retrieve balls in the surf. In the seven years that Simon visited with us in Seaforth, we never once saw him get short-tempered or lose his cool. His gentle manner and friendly attitude made him an ideal candidate for welcoming any new arrivals and he did a great job, whether they were big or small, young or old, timid or brave. Simon's passing leaves a big gap that will be very hard to fill but we will remember him fondly and keep him in our hearts.

And I'm sure he understands.

Then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes,
But I never say naught thereat.
For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes,
But never a friend like that.

These two dear friends said goodbye this week as they were lovingly released from any further pain. Each one was special in their own way and we'll miss the times we spent with both of them. We look forward to meeting up with them again when it's time for us to cross the bridge to the place where all good dogs live on.

"If friends fail us, if the phone is silent and the postman passes

Our dog will touch our knee , and smile, and say

Who cares? All the more time for us to be together

Come for a walk. This is a splendid day. "

A Newf's Prayer

My people are so precious, Lord, I know you think so too…
And I believe You put me here to love them just for You!
They take such gentle care of me and have such tender hearts…
Please use me, Lord, to comfort them whenever teardrops start.
They face a lot of battles as they live and work each day…
They need me Lord, to make them smile and show them how to play!

The world is full of people, but sometimes real friends are few….
Please let my love and loyalty remind them, Lord, of You.
And when my final moment comes, Lord, tell them as we part…
I was a made-to-order gift from Your great and loving heart!

A good dog never dies, he always stays,

And walks besides you on crispy autumn days,

When frost is on the fields and when the year

Is ending and the winter is drawing near.

And when it's summer and when the bees are humming

He leaps ahead of you and awaits you coming,

And anytime you're lonely, look, you'll see

His great eyes watching you solemnly.

Just call him in your heart, he'll cease his play

His head within your hand in his old way.

She passed away December 1, 2012.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then will you do what must be done
For this—the last battle—can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand
But don't let grief then stay your hand
For on this day, more than all the rest
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend
Only, stay with me until the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
It is a kindness you do to me
Although my tail, its last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Don't grieve that it must now be you
Who has to decide this thing to do
We've been so close—we two—these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

We have a secret, you and I,

That no one else shall know,

For who, but I can see you lie,

Each night in fire glow?

And who but I, can reach my hand

Before we go to bed,

And feel the living warmth of you

And touch your silken head?

And only I walk woodland paths,

And see, ahead of me,

Your small form racing with the wind,

So young again, and free.

And only I can see you swim

In every brook I pass.

And, when I call, no one but I

Can see the bending grass.

Mary's Sister & Partner

June 26, 1953 - Oct 31, 2011

We can shed tears that she is gone,

Or we can smile because she has lived.

We can close our eyes and pray that she will come back,

Or we can open our eyes and see everything she has left.

Our hearts can be empty because we can't see her,

Or we can be full of the love we've shared.

We can turn our backs on tomorrow and live yesterday,

Or we can cherish her memory and let it live on.

We can cry and close our mind, be empty and turn our backs,

Or we can do what she'd want: smile, open our eyes, love and go on.

At Country Critter Sitters, our guests say the nicest things !

From Sally West's Family - March 2008

In January, 2008 I had hip replacement surgery. This meant no dog walking for seven long weeks. Chris and I missed our Border collie Sally dreadfully. The condo was too quiet and too clean and there was nobody to make us laugh. However, this period would have been far worse had it not been for Mary and Cathy and the crew at Country Critter Sitters. At least we knew Sally was having the best possible time, and we were able to keep in touch by checking the daily diaries. We even caught occasional glimpses of her in photographs. We cannot thank Mary and Cathy enough for their loving care of our Sally and their understanding of the nature of this breed.

From Penny Casey's Family  - May 2007

This is a wonderful place for dogs to be -- truly a home-away-from-home.  I was impressed by the attention paid to each dog and by the atmosphere of enjoyment and energy.  My Newfoundland dog, Penny, had a wonderful time running and swimming and is probably hoping for a chance to visit again! It was great to be able to get news of her via the diary.

From Murphy Cameron-Brown's Family - October 2005

We first heard of Country Critter Sitters from mutual friends, Basil & Jane Coady.  They spoke so highly of Mary & Cathy that we felt we had to check out their "doggie resort" by the ocean. We were immediately impressed by the comfortable surroundings and obvious care for all of their guests. We have been fortunate to be able to leave Murphy

for lots of mini vacations, sometimes on very short notice.  We really appreciate the accommodations made for us. The journals are the best! A really nice touch. Murphy always comes home relaxed and sleepy...looking forward to his next visit. Thanks for being there!

Shaq had a blast. He came home and slept until 10am the next morning. It was great to know that Shaq had fun and was so well taken care of at your home.. That is what it was like for us, leaving him with friends. Thanks for giving him a better vacation then we had and we had a great one.

From Scotia Greening's Family - August 2005

I've been meaning to write this for a long time, but I've discovered its hard  to put into words the love and affection I have for the Country Critter Sitters.  Mary and Cathy have added such love and comfort to both Scotia and I over the past year and a half since her first visit. Whenever I need to trust Scotia's care to those who will love her as much as me and give her more fun than I could, its Mary & Cathy who come to mind. Scotia swims at CCS - she's a Sheltie! Shelties typically don't swim.. That's what a stay at the "Resort" does for your dog - and you. It opens your eyes to all the wonderful experiences you will both have under Mary & Cathy's care and endless love of animals!

Thanks ladies! You mean the world to both me and Scotia. For those of you still not convinced - let me leave you with this thought.  Once you go Country Critter Sitters, you never go back!!

From Quarrie's Family - February 2005

When our female Schnauzer died in August at age seven and a half we were devastated to say the least.  Our male Schnauzer, Quarrie,  was worse as he did not understand where she was.  They had never been apart for anything.  They were groomed together, went to the Vets together, slept and ate together etc.  He was doing so poorly we  wondered if we wouldn't lose him as well.  I  think our little doggy from heaven intervened and saved Quarrie.  Mary and Cathy came into our lives and we have never looked back.  Although Quarrie is still sad it is only when he is home and lonely and bored.  Mary, Cathy, Doofus, Sonny, Mac, Morgan, Devon, Joe and all the guest dogs have given him a new lease on life.  It has enabled me to leave him for more than an hour or two and we never worry when we leave him as he is loved and taken such good care of.  Mary and Cathy are exceptional woman who I am so happy to call friends.  The reality is, Quarrie is taken better care of  there than he is at home as his days are so filled and he is so tired he does not have time to grieve.  How do you thank people for giving you back your dog?

Hi Mary and Cathy,

It is so lovely to have Jake and Amber home. We missed them so very much. Can't believe how much they have grown. They obviously had a wonderful time with you. Thanks for all the effort you put in, even their brush was clean! Of course you can post our email address on your reference page. No doubt we will see you again soon, as we go away regularly and we are certain Jake and Amber would love to come and stay again. We may even come to your beach over the next few weekends.

Best wishes

Gary and I just want to say thanks again for the wonderful care given to Maggie for the week she was with you. You both are certainly unique in the service you provide to these pets that mean so much to their "humans". I was so touched by the personal diary that you put together for Maggie. Guest dogs are integrated into the Taplin home with the family and their pets and receive 24 hour supervised care. There is a large fenced property that allows the dogs to have off leash privileges as long as they are obedient and well-socialized.  Personal feeding, necessary health care and guest I.D. tags are provided along with lots of pats and playtime.
